General

Of exceptional beauty, with stunning views of the Khanti range in the foreground and the high ‘berg beyond, Lake Glencairn covers some 250 hectares.

Home to fish eagles, waterfowl, otters and small felines (genet, civet and caracal), which hunt its marshy reed beds, the lake is well stocked with rainbow and brown trout and has yielded fish in excess of 10lbs. Common reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, eland, Zebras, Blesbucks, duiker and baboons are commonly seen (along with over 100 bird species) on the surrounding hills. Jackals though seldom seen, are often heard at night.

Sheltering beneath the Giant’s Cup in the unspoiled Southern Natal Drakensberg National Park, a World Heritage site, just 12 km from Sani Pass, lies a little known secluded valley on the Pholela River catchment.

The lake which takes its name from the trout farm nestling in the valley is one of a chain of five that dot this pristine waterway.
