PMB & Midlands
Pietermaritzburg, set amidst forested hills and the rolling countryside of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, is one of the best-preserved Victorian cities in the world.
Events that draw thousands of visitors annually include the world renowned Comrades and Dusi Marathons, Art in the Park South Africa’s premier outdoor art selling exhibition, Cars in the Park a popular gathering of vintage cars, as well as the Royal Show and the Garden and Leisure Show, which is often referred to as “Africa’s Chelsea”.
This region has so much to offer visitors cultural experiences, adrenalin pumping activities such as hiking routes, biking, micro-lighting, 4×4 trails, white-water rafting, sailing or paragliding off Bulwer Mountain or gliding across under a canopy of trees at Karkloof. The magnificent Howick Falls provide scenic picnic facilities or the opportunity to abseil the 107m drop down the falls.
After all that adrenalin, relax at one of the many sublime and rejuvenating health spas in the area. You could even stroll around the fascinating monument that has been erected at the site where Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962 at a roadblock on the R103 near Howick.
The nearby Midlands Meander route is a delightful shopping and browsing trip, with antique shops, speciality food options including cheese and chocolate producers, art galleries and arts and crafts studios, where one often meets the artists on site.
Accommodation ranges from excellent hotels, charming boutique hotels, country lodges and luxury spa resorts, to country style B&Bs.
